One of the interests I have in time travel, besides wanting to go back and see stuff (and be a douche and change some stuff in my life, Can you say "Butterfly Effect"?) is the idea of the alternate histories that spring out of it. The pop culture norms of Germany winning WWII or the CSA winning the American Civil War. Mostly the main stream media (kill me I just used a Sarah Palin phrase!!!) glosses over the how and focus on the now.
Having WWII turn out different (with a possible German victory in Europe) could have happened with only a hand full of events. Where the CSA winning the USCV would have taken a lot of effort (gaining a manufacturing infrastructure, garnering foreign support).
For WWII it would be basically two events that would have made the war (and the time after very very different). Delay the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. That would have allowed Japan to focus on it's conquests in China and SE Asia. Japan's aggression at that time mainly dealt with population problems and the need for resources. This would have also delayed the US entry into WWII, the US was pretty isolationist after WWI. The second would have been trying to talk Hitler into not invading the USSR. Once again it would have allowed a gather of resources and rebuilding their war machine.
The Nazi A-Bomb project was scrapped pretty soon after it was started. But that's not say it would stay the same if we messed with the time line. There would still be the research into nuclear power but the idea of the Bomb might not happen.
With a large chunk of China being occupied (and not all of China was "Red China" back then) by the Japanese and Germany having occupied all of mainland Europe from the Atlantic to the Soviet Border (and part of North Africa) those two powers could have focused on their proxy wars. Germany had a covert op in India and some other English Colonies (in our real time line). Stalin's Soviet Union was largely agricultural and not industrial even though at the time of the Russian Revolution the Czars were trying to get Russia jumped started to the Industrial Revolution. It may have taken Stalin and his group a lot longer to get the industries in place without fighting a war to save the mother land.
Without a rallying cry of "Remember Pearl Harbor" the US might not get involved in the Second World War at all. The Cold War would have been a whole lot different. No Korea, no Vietnam, but there may have been other proxy wars in Africa and South America.
